Vael Ossvane still tallies the drowned in his sunken counting-house, and a Counting-King requires staff. The tally-clerks shuffle the flooded ledger-halls of Vael Anore, ink long since bled to cloud, totting figures on waterlogged slates that hold no marks. Each carries an abacus of knucklebone. They attack anyone uncounted — an intruder is, above all else, a discrepancy.
