The Pale Reach keeps its garrisons the way Esbren keeps his memories: frozen, so nothing can be taken. Snowbound knights stand watch in armor sealed with rime, thawing only enough to fight, then setting again. Some were Fordsworn who marched north and never reported back; the ice has kept them too well to ask. They defend nothing now but the cold's right to keep them.
