When Gullmaw soured Kierstein's wells, the filth he passed did not all pass on. In the Souring Drains it pooled, thickened, and remembered enough of hunger to stand. The Shambling Sludge is the first rot's leavings given a gait — it wanders the market's undergut swallowing whatever falls through the grates, still learning, as the fen downstream learned, how to be hungry.
