The Hollowing Cells do not chew so much as absorb, and the Membrane Polyp is the fen's stomach-lining budded off and gone wandering. A translucent sac of half-digested yesterdays, it drifts the cell-hollows engulfing whatever brushes it, and within its skin the swallowed things can sometimes still be seen — moving, faintly, as if they mean to finish something.
