Gullmaw boasted that downstream the fen was learning to be hungry, and the marsh gulpers are its first lesson. Squat mouths on legs, they wallow the Bloodfen's shallows swallowing whatever the battlefield runoff floats past — bone, buckle, boot, occasionally the boot's owner. They gulp, the fen digests, the Matron is nursed. Simple creatures with a simple place in a very thorough arrangement.
