The Foreman Undying keeps the vault-forges lit, and the Furnace Stokers keep them fed — with coal while the coal lasted, then timber, then furniture, then anything that burns. Once they were foundry men proud of their heat; the rot welded the pride in place and burned the rest away. They shuffle the gantries with full shovels and empty faces, forever certain the next quota will end the war.
