Where Varokhaz salted the earth, the fields forgot how to be fields and became waste. The duneshadow jackals were farm dogs and shepherd's hounds once, left behind in the evacuations; the salt got into their blood and their loyalty curdled into patience. They circle travelers at the edge of sight for miles, waiting with a herdsman's discipline for one of the flock to fall behind.
