The Marches' farmers lashed straw men to crosses to keep the crows from what little the rot left them. When the wells soured, the fields learned to keep watch on their own account. Cross-Straw Sentinels drag their stakes behind them down the furrows, faithful past all reason, guarding harvests that were never brought in for farmers who never came home.
