The Stringwright's theatre must not be interrupted — every night the Marionette Court restages the memories Ninelle stole, performed for an empty house so the grief has somewhere to go. The stringbound wardens were the audience once, mourners of the Pale Reach lifted into the rigging and given parts. They patrol the aisles on taut wire, ushering intruders out of a play that never, ever closes.
