In the Marionette Court, the Stringwright restages the memories Ninelle stole — nightly, with puppets, to an empty house. The Curtain Prowlers keep it empty. Stitched from stage-velvet and severed string, they circle the aisles on soundless feet, ushering out anything that might interrupt the performance. They are not cruel; they simply know the show must go on, because the show is all that remains of what was forgotten.
