THE GILDED RELIQUARY

When the Concord melted its relief-gold into an effigy of a king that never was, someone had to guard the shame. The Reliquary Wardens were tomb-keepers of the Gilded Reliquary, gilded themselves by proximity and greed until the gold went all the way through. They still challenge visitors in the old formal manner — halt, kneel, be counted — then kill them regardless of the answer.
