THE CROWNLESS GARDEN

The last king's gardens had watch-beasts once, sleek and collared in royal green. Three hundred seasons of the Regent's tending made the Crownless Garden feral, and the prowlers went feral with it, circling the overgrown grave they were bred to guard. They no longer remember the king. They remember the circuit, and they walk it, and anything found inside the ring is a trespasser.
