THE STINGING REEF

Where Ysmr the Tidewarden nests, the reef itself takes up his office. The Polyp-Wardens are coral grown over the half-drowned who sank too close to the Stinging Reef — men kept, in the Tidewarden's fashion, half-alive inside their own stinging armor. They patrol the general's threshold with a keeper's diligence, gathering trespassers gently, firmly, down toward the water that never lets anything go.
