When Kaurax, the Ash-Archon, tunneled beneath Harrowgate for a breach thirty years "nearly ready," the Emberpit Abyss he opened did not stay empty. The stalkers came up with the heat — lean things of cinder and appetite that hunt the sappers' old galleries by the glow of anything living. The Iron Tithe seal a shaft each winter. Each spring the scratching finds a new one.
